Food Safety Tips for Babies

Infants have immature digestive systems and are more susceptible to foodborne illness. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that infants be breastfed or given sterile, pre-packaged formula. However, not all women have the ability to breastfeed, and, in light of recent events, formula may not be readily available.

Dangers and Alternatives

In recent months, there has been increasing concern over the presence of harmful chemicals in powdered baby formula. These chemicals can come from a variety of sources, including the water used to prepare the formula, the containers used to store it, and even the formula itself. While most of these chemicals are present in very small amounts, they can accumulate over time and pose a severe health risk to infants. Alternative options for recalled food products include:

  • Pre-mixed formula
  • Store-brand formula
  • Gerber
  • Enfamil

No Formula Available Due to Shortage?

In the event that there is no formula available to due the nationwide shortage, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the following for the current urgent situation:

For Infants Under 6 Months – If you cannot find formula because of the ongoing shortage, contact your doctor about what feeding option may work best.

Infants 6 Months to a Year – If no formula is available, you may give your infant pasteurized and unflavored (not raw) whole cow’s milk. This should only be short-term, as long as a week, as it does not carry an adequate amount of nutrients. Talk with your doctor if you are unsure.

Avoiding Recalled Products

When you are buying powdered baby food, you should always check the lot number to ensure that you are not purchasing a recalled product. The lot number is usually a series of numbers and letters that indicate when the product was manufactured.

If the lot number on your product matches a recall notice, you should stop using the product and contact the manufacturer for a refund or replacement. Checking lot numbers is essential in ensuring that you are only feeding your baby safe, healthy food.
