Common Physical Injuries Caused by JUUL

Vaping was first introduced into the market as a safe alternative to traditional cigarettes. While some medical experts opine that vaping can sometimes be a “safer” alternative, it is far from harmless.

The truth of the matter is that e-cigarettes still contain nicotine and often have other harmful chemical components, like carbonyl compounds. JUUL e-cigarettes, in particular, carry a very high nicotine content: According to the company’s website, each JUULpod has the same nicotine content as a whole pack of traditional cigarettes. It comes as no surprise that the harmful effects JUULs can have on your body are not few and far between.

How Does JUUL Use Affect Your Body?

The most common type of physical injury experienced because of JUUL use is nicotine addiction. As mentioned, JUULpods carry a high concentration of nicotine, one higher than any other e-cigarette sold in the United States. What’s more, JUULs are known for how easy they are to smoke. They emit less vapor than other e-cigarettes as well, meaning they can be smoked more discreetly. These factors often contribute to JUUL users smoking more nicotine than they intend.

Other Types of JUUL-Related Physical Injuries

There are several other common injuries that go hand in hand with JUUL use:

  • Nicotine poisoning: Like any drug, it is possible to have too much nicotine in your system. This is most common among young children, who accidentally ingest the liquid inside JUULpods, and less so among smokers themselves.
  • Lung and respiratory conditions: There are many effects that vaping can have on the respiratory system, including lung irritation and damage from toxic chemical compounds (acetals) present in vape liquids.
  • Heart attacks and conditions: Per the American College of Cardiology, research has shown that people who vape are 56% more likely to suffer a heart attack. In addition, it was found that their risk of coronary artery disease and circulatory problems is 10% and 44% higher, respectively than nonusers.
  • Strokes: Per the same study mentioned above, vaping increases a person’s risk of suffering a stroke by 30%. A study from the American Stroke Association found this figure to be as high as 71%.
  • Seizures: A link between vaping and seizures was discovered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These incidents happened among first-time and experienced users, either after a few puffs or about one day after use. Research into this link is still ongoing.
