What Makes the Eye Drops Dangerous?
The majority of the recalled eye drops are believed to be contaminated by a drug-resistant bacterial microbe called Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The bacteria are strong enough that they can significantly damage the cornea, enter the eye, and possibly damage the optic nerve. If untreated, a severe infection may occur that could be life-threatening for certain people.
Some recalled eye drop products contained methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a drug that has not yet gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval. MSM is marketed unlawfully in the United States and still makes its way into some products. It is not clear if MSM can cause eye damage, though. More research is needed, which is why the FDA has not approved it yet.
Injuries & Deaths Caused by Unsafe Eye Drops
So far, contaminated eye drops have been linked to:
- At least 4 deaths
- At least 4 eyeball removal surgeries
- At least 14 cases of permanent blindness
- At least 81 cases of severe eye injury
The total number of people injured by the eye drops is not known. It is likely that many minor eye injuries have been caused by the products but have mostly gone unreported because hospitalization was not needed. Overall, hundreds of people – if not more – could have already been injured by these unsafe products.
Damages in Eye Drop Injury Claims

Our attorneys are looking into the situation to uncover damages that could be available to the average claimant or plaintiff. The damages in an eye drop injury lawsuit could relate to:
