What Are the Risks of Using Uloric?
Uloric is drug produced by the Takeda Pharmaceutical Company to treat gout – a condition characterized by an excessive buildup of uric acid in the blood, causing needle-like crystalline molecules to form in a person’s joints and extremities. As a result, those with gout can suffer intense pain, swelling, and tenderness in joint tissue. Although gout can affect anyone, those who suffer from diabetes and kidney disease have an increased risk of developing gout.
The active chemical ingredient in Uloric is called febuxostat, which has been marketed as a pharmaceutical to treat gout since 2009. During clinic trials, research data suggested a correlation between the use of febuxostat and an increased risk of death due to cardiac conditions.
In 2018, a postmarket study of febuxostat involving more than 6,000 patients concluded there was a significant correlation between the drug and fatal cardiac events. As a result, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) imposed a “black box” warning on the drug regarding the increased risk of cardiovascular death for Uloric.
