Driving at Night: 5 Essential Tips for Safe Nighttime Driving

Safety Tips for Driving at Night

Driving at night is a common, albeit justified, fear. Fortunately, with a little planning and preparation, it is possible to reduce the danger of nighttime driving. Here are five tips to help you stay safe and protect those around you while on the road at night.

1. Check Your Headlights & Taillights

It is integral to ensure that both your headlights and taillights are in working order. Many drivers only worry about their headlights because they directly impact how well they can see in the dark. However, taillights are just as important, as they ensure that drivers behind you can see your vehicle.

2. Keep an Eye Out for Pedestrians & Bicyclists

Pedestrians and bicyclists are difficult enough to see during the day; at night, they may seem to pop up out of nowhere. In addition to keeping them in mind, it is advisable to drive slower than usual so you can actively look out for them.

3. Reduce Distractions

Distracted driving is particularly dangerous at night, in part because of the reduced visibility associated with nighttime driving. Dial up your attempts to reduce driver distraction so you can give the road your full and undivided attention: Don’t simply silence your phone—stow it away somewhere that is out of reach. And save eating and drinking for when you arrive at your destination.

4. Keep Your Windshield Clean

Dirty windshields will increase glare and reduce visibility. You do not need to clean your windshield every day, but a routine cleaning can make nighttime drives a whole lot safer. Between cleanings, it can help to use windshield wiper fluid to quickly clean your windshield before you pull out of your driveway. As long as you have working windshield wipers and a good supply of washer fluid (like most cars), this will only take two or three seconds to do using the wiper controls behind your steering wheel.

5. Get Your Eyes Checked Annually

Eyesight may get worse with age. It is a good idea to have your vision checked annually, even if you have never worn glasses. The right prescription could greatly improve your night vision. If you do not want to wear your glasses all the time, you can keep them in your car and only wear them when you are behind the wheel.
