Dietary Supplement Lawsuit

Let Schlesinger Law Offices, P.A. Handle Your Claim

A Dietary Supplement is intended for ingestion and contains a “dietary ingredient” intended to add further nutritional value to the diet. Unfortunately, several brands of these supplements have been shown to be made up of filler ingredients instead of the actual supplement itself.

Dietary Supplements Under Investigation

It was found that several store brand herbal supplements did not contain any of the herbs it claimed on the labels. These supposed medicinal herbs were simply filled with cheap fillers an approximate four out of five times.

  • Walmart “Spring Valley” Brand

Ginseng, Garlic, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto, Gingko Biloba, and St. John’s Wort. None of the products tested by the AG consistently revealed DNA from the labeled herb. In 90 tests, the DNA findings matched the label only 4% of the time. Moreover, the products were found to be contaminated with filler ingredients, including rice and wheat/grass, palm, and cassava.

  • Walgreens’ “Finest Nutrition” Brand

Ginseng, Garlic, Echinacea, Gingko Biloba and St. John’s Wort. In 90 tests of six products, the DNA findings matched the label only 18% of the time. The products were found to be contaminated with filler ingredients, including rice, wheat, palm, and daisy.

  • GNC “Herbal Plus” Brand

Ginseng, Echinacea, Saw Palmetto, Gingko Biloba, and St. John’s Wort. In 120 tests of six products, the DNA findings matched the label only 22% of the time. The products were found to be contaminated with filler ingredients, including asparagus and alfalfa.

  • Target “Up & Up” Brand

Testing revealed no trace of DNA of Gingko Biloba, St. John’s Wort or Valerian Root in those supplements. Target products were also found to be contaminated with filler ingredients, including allum, asparagus and pea.

In some cases, the substances used as fillers could be dangerous to those with allergies.
